Are you trying to help someone who is struggling with substance use or misuse?

The shame and secrecy surrounding substance use, misuse and substance use disorders (SUDs) leaves many of our loved ones feeling helpless and defeated.

WORDS MATTER.  We must change the language to stamp out the shame and secrecy associated with substance use to end the stigma felt by our loved ones.

RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE !

It is often a painful and difficult journey to navigate when someone we love is at risk from substance use, misuse, or the chronic brain disease of a substance use disorder.  There are ways in which you can help them, and yourself, on the journey.

  • Are you looking for a more meaningful connection with a loved one who is misusing drugs and/or alcohol?
  • Do you want to learn about ways in which you can help your loved one during periods of use/misuse, treatment and recovery?
  • How would it feel to talk to someone who has common lived experience and is a trained family recovery peer parent coach?
  • Finding it hard to take care of yourself during these challenging times when the fear, frustration, helplessness, and perhaps even anger take over?
  • Are you, like many of us, searching for ways to get support, avoid isolation, and just connect with someone who has been there and understands?
  • This is really stressful! And you are not alone.

If you are trying to help someone who is struggling with substance use or misuse, a Peer Coach can help you to…

  • Lessen the tension, conflict and heated emotion in your relationship and household.
  • Allow yourself to be a part of the change process yet take care of yourself.
  • Talk to a loved one in ways that improve collaboration and encourage behavioral change.
  • Respond more effectively, both to the positive changes your loved one makes, as well as to their less positive behaviors, while allowing natural consequences play a role in motivating them to change.
