WHILE THE STATISTICS ARE STAGGERING, IT IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST NUMBERS . . . .
I have lost half of my family to the disease of substance use disorder. The boys’ use of prescription pain medications for depression and anxiety reached a tragic end with addiction to opioids and ultimate overdose deaths after multiple periods of residential treatment and non-use. What I am sure of: they did not want to be dependent on any substances and they did not want to die before they had the chance to truly live.
We all have a tale to tell. Please share your comments and stories of recovery or loss to help end shame and secrecy for substance use disorders.
